Homemade Applesauce
Over the past year, I've been on a transformative fitness journey, something my close friends, family, and many of my clients know well. It's been a rewarding and challenging path, but with dedication, healthier eating, and regular exercise, I've not only reached my weight loss goal but even surpassed it. This experience has taught me so much about resilience, mindful choices, and the importance of celebrating small wins along the way.
One of my biggest challenges throughout this journey has been curbing my sweet tooth. Like many, I’ve often craved sugary snacks and treats, but I found creative ways to satisfy those cravings without sabotaging my goals. Swapping out sweets for fruits or low-calorie options like popcorn has been a simple but effective strategy, especially during those moments when the sugar urge strikes.
With the holiday season upon us, resisting the pull of sugary dishes can feel even harder. That’s why one of my go-to holiday recipes is a homemade applesauce that’s naturally sweetened, satisfying, and healthy. Unlike traditional applesauce recipes that are heavy on white or brown sugar, this version uses natural sugar substitutes, making it a great option for anyone looking to enjoy a festive treat without the added guilt.
If you’re following Weight Watchers (non-diabetic plan), you’ll love that this recipe counts as a Zero-Point food. It’s perfect as a holiday side dish or a snack between meals, and it doesn’t compromise on flavor. Plus, I love making it in a slow cooker because it fills the house with a warm, cozy aroma. But if you’re pressed for time, an Instant Pot works great, too, delivering that same delicious flavor in half the time.
Here’s to healthy choices, even during the holidays. Enjoy, and stay committed to your journey!

Notes:
- The sweetener can be omitted if you'd prefer an unsweetened applesauce.
- This applesauce is great warm, chilled, or room temperature.
- Store leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
- This applesauce can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months. Pour into smaller freezer bags for better portion control.
- This applesauce can be made in an Instant Pot. Mix all of the ingredients as above. The pressure release knob should be in the sealed position. Cook on High Pressure for 7 minutes. Let the pot sit for 10 minutes for a Natural Release. Then move the pressure release knob to Venting to quick release the remaining pressure. Mash or blend the cooked apples as mentioned above.
